An INSULATED Metal Shed base

Building a shed base is a crucial step in ensuring the longevity and functionality of your shed. One effective method involves using Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) framing, which provides a durable and strong foundation. CFS framing is resistant to corrosion, pests, and fire, making it an ideal choice for outdoor structures. With these properties in mind we found Wall-Panel Prefab based out of DeForest Wisconsin who is a leader in the industry.  Just wait until our next post for more details!   We started by assembling the  CFS frame (which consisted of setting it on our cement pad), ensuring it's level and square. This frame acts as the skeleton for our shed base, offering structural integrity and support for the layers that follow.

Next, we looked to enhance the thermal performance and insulation by incorporating rigid insulation, spray foam, and rock wool. We begin by installing rigid insulation panels (R10) between the CFS framing, which provides a continuous layer of insulation and helps prevent thermal bridging. We then sealed any seams with seam tape and followed up by applying spray foam insulationto seal any gaps to ensure an airtight barrier, which not only improves energy efficiency but also helps prevent moisture infiltration. Finally, add a layer of Rockwool insulation(R16), known for its excellent thermal and acoustic properties, to further enhance the shed's insulation and soundproofing.

To complete the shed base, we installed a sturdy subfloor on top of the insulated CFS framing. We used a high-quality moisture resistant (OSB) which for our subfloor due to its strength and stability. Secure the subfloor panels to the CFS framing with self-tapping screws, ensuring a tight fit and minimal movement. This subfloor will provide a solid and even surface for whatever flooring we choose to install and remain durable for years to come. By combining CFS framing, rigid insulation, spray foam, rock wool, and a reliable subfloor, we created a shed base that is not only strong and durable but also well-insulated and comfortable which is critical for those late nights in the dead of winter.
